Piedmont, Peloponnese, and Méditerranée By The Glass

Large Formats – Week of August 21st 2023

We have a few plain-old favorites to pour by the glass this week at Bar Boulud!

Starting off the week sublime with Nebbiolo from Lessona’s finest producer: Massimo Clerico. A tiny appellation in the province of Biella, just north of Barolo, sitting at approximately 350m above sea level, the wines from Lessona can be a bit elusive at times. Ancient sandy marine soils and a wet, cool climate usually yield a weightlessness to Clerico’s Nebbiolo and with age, I’m sure some darker tones and a loosened core will command attention.

Mid-week, we’ll open a Greek Red: Parparoussis’ Nemea Reserve 2012. Nemea is a subregion of the Peloponnese and the sight of Hercules’s killing of the lion (in the myth, Hercules drank a Nemean red either after or before the feat… A debate that still rages amongst classicists). I went to Nemea in early June and was surprised to see how high the actual mountains were surrounding the valley. The grape of Nemea is Agiorgitiko, which is red-fruited, spicy, and densely mineral; I would liken a great Nemean Agiorgitiko to a Montefalco Sagrantino or a denser Sangiovese. With a bit of age here too, we should be in for a ride.

And for the weekend—rosé!!
