The Wines of Burgundy, Part Two

“There are many ways to the recognition of truth, and Burgundy is one of them.”- Isak Dinesen

Please join us this week at Bar Boulud for another amazing week of large format Burgundy by the glass.

A good friend once told me that, looking back, he was glad that he was broke when he worked in a wine store when he was in college. He felt that experience, of really paying attention and studying the simple wines he could afford at that time, paid dividends later in the enjoyment of his experiences tasting some of the great Burgundies of the world. He had trained his palate on humble wines, and Burgundy was the great reward.

For those who have been lucky enough have those experiences with great Burgundy, it often feels like another form of communication from the universe, like a different type of music, a foreign language heard for the first time in all of its rhythm and consonance.

On Monday evening, we will open one of our few remaining bottles of Gérard Duplessis Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaillon’ 2013, a beautiful expression of Chablis at its purest. Lean and mineral, with the smell of the sea in it, our sommelier team is looking forward to this wine as much as anything we have opened lately. Please come early though, as we only have one magnum to go around. We are also very excited to revisit the Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru ‘Île de Vergelesses’ 2010, this time from magnum, a wine that shows its origin near the hill of Corton in a clear and rustic voice. Later in the week we will open two Jeroboams from Clos de la Chapelle in Volnay, including their Volnay 1er Cru ‘En Carelle’, a sumptuous expression of this beautiful vineyard at the top of the teardrop of Volnay’s great vineyards. Will will open Joseph Voillot’s Volnay 1er Cru ‘Les Champans’ from cellar on Sunday, to close down two great weeks of Burgundy, this promises to be a fun comparison with En Carelle.

Happy holidays to all, and thanks to everyone who has shown interest in our Tuesday Trivia wine, it’s been great fun and really encourages us to keep sharing great wines with you.
