Springtime Pours

The weather is warming, the first flowers are peeking up out of the ground, and at Bar Boulud, we are setting up our sidewalk café on Broadway. Sharing a glass of wine outside with a friend, watching the crowds fill in and out of Lincoln Center, we are very excited about the upcoming season. So much so, this week, we are featuring Big Bottle by the glass pours that are perfect for the Spring.

The Spring is full of beautiful aromas, the smell of the park after rain, lilacs on the Westside bike path, flowers all around the city. To find perfect wines for the Spring, we look for wines that have vibrancy, a kind electric tinge that wakes the palate up after a long winter. And as the farmer’s market gets more and more exciting each week, we look for lighter, fresher whites and reds to pair with the beautiful fruits and vegetables of the spring.

This week we have some very exciting wines. Monday, we have a beautiful chenin blanc from Frantz Saumon in Montlouis-sur-Loire. Saumon’s chenin has a beautiful texture, with richness balanced against a deep mineral cut. On the nose, the wine has notes of pear blossom and lanolin, making this a wine that begs for springtime drinking. Thursday evening, we have a beautiful northern Italian white from Giovanni Almondo in the Piedmont’s Roero district. Roero has a deeply sandy soil which is perfect for the Arneis grape, creating a uniquely mineral white wine.  Roero also produces some of the best asparagus in the world, and Arneis is the perfect pairing for this often difficult dish.

And of course, please join us on Friday as we open a very special 3-Liter Double-Magnum of Franck Balthazar’s Cornas ‘Chaillot’ 2015. Balthazar’s style is fresh and open, emphasizing a purity of fruit, with a beautifully earthy bouquet of orchard fruit, blackberry, and violets. Chaillot, along with Reynard, is one of the best vineyards in Cornas, and Franck’s meticulous farming and deft hand in the cellar produces one of the most exciting wines in the appellation.
